Belgium is a unique combination of old world charm and the natural scenic beauty of rolling terrain to the shore of Lake Michigan. The Village of Belgium began in 1848 as a railroad settlement. Today, the town has grown to a population of 2,245 people.
Belgium’s close proximity to Lake Michigan allows for easy access to one of the largest freshwater lakes in the world. Along the shores of Lake Michigan is Harrington Beach State Park. The park is 715 acres in size and has a mile long stretch of beachfront to work with. 73 campsites became available for visitors to reserve in 2009 and reservations can be made 11 months in advance. Harrington Beach even offers an accessible cabin for those with disabilities who still love to enjoy the outdoors. If you’re interested in astrology, check out the Jim and Gwen Plunkett Observatory located within the park. The observatory has a 20 inch telescope that weighs over 2000 pounds! This telescope provides picturesque views of the night sky and should be a must stop.
In the Village of Belgium, there is a museum that is dedicated to showcasing the history of the small country of Luxembourg in Europe. The Luxembourg Cultural Society opened in 2009 and is hailed as the only cultural center in the world that celebrates the background and culture of Luxembourg. The Roots and Leaves Immigration Museum is housed within the last Luxembourg-style barn in the area. It was built by a Luxembourg immigrant named Jacob Mamer who immigrated from his home country to Port Washington. This museum showcases the history of Luxembourg and it’s citizens through intricate displays of pictures and documents and very detailed sculptures. The museum offers two different experiences. The general admission allows you to explore the museum on your own with an audio program to lead you along. The VIP tour is a guided experience that goes in-depth with all the exhibits. Whether you have Luxembourg heritage or not, the museum is definitely a must see.
